The SSY Maturity Formula (With Worked Example)

Deposits run for 15 years; compounding runs for all 21. Using the standard year-start deposit model:

FV = D × (((1 + r)15 − 1) / r) × (1 + r) × (1 + r)6

Worked Example

Deposit D = ₹1,50,000 a year at r = 8.2%:

1. 15-year deposit corpus = 1.5L × ((1.08215 − 1)/0.082) × 1.082 = ₹44.76 L
2. Six more deposit-free compounding years: × 1.0826
3. Maturity = ₹71.82 L on just ₹22.50 L deposited

SSY Rules Every Parent Should Know (2026)

  • Who: A girl child below age 10; one account per child, two per family (three for twins/triplets).
  • Limits: ₹250 minimum and ₹1.5 lakh maximum per financial year. Missing the minimum costs a ₹50 penalty.
  • Deposits: Only for the first 15 years. The account then compounds untouched until maturity at 21 years from opening.
  • Withdrawals: Up to 50% of the previous year-end balance for the girl's education after she turns 18 or passes Class 10; full withdrawal on marriage after 18.
  • Rate resets quarterly: 8.2% applies to Oct-Dec 2026; the government notifies small-savings rates every quarter.

SSY FAQs

On rate, yes: SSY pays 8.2% against PPF's 7.1% (Oct-Dec 2026) with the same EEE tax-free status and the same ₹1.5 lakh yearly cap. The trade-off is purpose and access - SSY is tied to the child's education or marriage milestones, while PPF is more flexible after 15 years. Many families max SSY first, then use PPF for additional tax-free saving.

The account becomes a "defaulted account" if the ₹250 minimum is missed. It can be regularised within 15 years of opening by paying ₹50 penalty per missed year plus the minimum deposits. Interest keeps accruing meanwhile, but regularising promptly is cheaper and simpler.

No - unlike an FD, the SSY rate is reset by the government every quarter and the new rate applies to your balance. 8.2% is the current notified rate (Oct-Dec 2026). This calculator assumes a steady rate across the term; the maturity you actually receive will float with future notifications.
