The PPF Maturity Formula (With Worked Example)

PPF interest compounds once a year on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month. Using the standard yearly model (deposit at the start of the year), maturity is:

FV = D × (((1 + r)n − 1) / r) × (1 + r)

Worked Example

Deposit D = ₹1,00,000 every year at r = 7.1% for n = 15 years:

1. (1.071)15 = 2.79859
2. FV = 1,00,000 × ((2.79859 − 1) / 0.071) × 1.071 = ₹27,12,139
3. Tax-free interest earned = ₹12,12,139 on ₹15,00,000 deposited

PPF Rules Every Saver Should Know (2026)

  • Limits: Minimum ₹500 and maximum ₹1.5 lakh per financial year, in up to 12 deposits.
  • Lock-in: 15 years from the end of the opening financial year. On maturity you can extend in unlimited 5-year blocks, with or without fresh deposits.
  • Timing matters: Deposit before the 5th of the month (and before 5 April for the year) - interest counts from the month of deposit only if it is in by the 5th.
  • Liquidity: A loan against PPF is available from the 3rd financial year; one partial withdrawal a year is allowed from the 7th.
  • Rate resets quarterly: The 7.1% rate holds for Oct-Dec 2026; the government revises small-savings rates every quarter.

PPF Frequently Asked Questions

They solve different problems. PPF is government-backed, gives a fixed 7.1% (Oct-Dec 2026) and is fully tax-free, but locks money for 15 years. ELSS funds have a 3-year lock-in and market-linked returns, so they can grow faster but can also fall. FDs are flexible but their interest is fully taxable at your slab rate. Many savers split across all three.

The excess earns no interest and gets no Section 80C benefit. The slider on this page is capped at ₹1.5 lakh for exactly that reason - anything above the cap is simply parked without reward until you can withdraw it under the rules.

If you do not need the money, extending usually beats reinvesting elsewhere: the balance keeps compounding tax-free in 5-year blocks, and you can even stop depositing and let the corpus grow. Use the duration slider above (20, 25, 30 years) to see the effect - the extension years add disproportionately large interest.
