The Two GST Formulas (With Worked Examples)

Everything in GST math reduces to two directions of the same equation:

Final = Base × (1 + rate)   |   Base = MRP ÷ (1 + rate)

Worked Example — Removing GST from an MRP

A gadget is priced at ₹23,600 including 18% GST:

1. Base = 23,600 ÷ 1.18 = ₹20,000
2. GST = 23,600 - 20,000 = ₹3,600
3. Intra-state invoice: CGST ₹1,800 + SGST ₹1,800

  • 18% slab: The default - most services, electronics, capital goods, restaurants with ITC.
  • 28% slab: Luxury and sin goods - cars, tobacco, aerated drinks; compensation cess may apply on top.

GST Frequently Asked Questions

Because GST is calculated on the base price, not the MRP. 18% of ₹1,180 is ₹212.40, but the correct GST is ₹180. Always divide by (1 + rate) to back out the tax - subtracting the percentage directly overstates the tax.

No. CGST + SGST is just the same total rate split between the Centre and your state on intra-state sales. An 18% intra-state sale shows 9% + 9%; the identical inter-state sale shows 18% IGST. The buyer pays exactly the same.
